Whether you prefer kebabs, steaks, sausages, or hamburgers, your grill can create some of the most delicious meals out there. But while having a dependable grill can enhance your cooking experience, there are also a few things you can do to make the cooking venture a success. Before you fire up for your next cookout, here are some essential tips that can make for greater grilling.

5 Tips to Grill with Skill

1. Keep It Clean

Keeping grills clean offers a wide range of benefits. In terms of safety, it helps prevent carcinogens and bacteria from being transferred to food. When it comes to flavor, keeping the racks and grates clean will prevent unsavory elements from contaminating your meats or veggies. For proper cleaning, turn the heat up to high after cooking to kill off remaining bacteria, and use a grill brush to wipe away debris.

2. Heat With Patience

Like an oven, a grill takes time to reach the proper temperature for thorough cooking. Wait about 15 minutes after igniting the device before putting your food on to cook.

3. Rest Your Meat

grillsBefore cooking cuts of meat, let them sit out at room temperature for 20 to 30 minutes. This practice will help the meat cook more evenly when on the grill, as well as remove excess surface moisture that can interfere with searing. Once the meat is cooked, let it sit for another 15 minutes to allow all the juices to distribute evenly.

4. Count Your Flips

Not every meat should be flipped as frequently as others. Steaks, for instance, should be flipped multiple times to promote even cooking at a faster rate. Chicken, on the other hand, should be grilled on one side each, not flipped multiple times. Burgers should only be flipped once halfway through the entire grilling process. This method is believed to produce a better flavor, prevent overcooking, and reduce overall cooking time.

5. Sauce Strategically

Adding barbecue sauce to meat is another important element of grilling that requires careful timing. Specifically, if you add sauce too early, its sugars will burn away and give the meat a bad flavor. However, if you wait too long, the meat will not have enough time to absorb the sauce fully. As a general rule of thumb, apply sauce about 10 minutes before finishing to promote the best balance.
