Getting a dental implant is the best way to replace damaged or missing teeth. Since they are permanent and durable, dental implants are attached more securely and last longer than dentures or bridgework. The surgical process, however, is quite grueling and can take months before completion—depending on the type of implant and condition of your jawbone. Listed below are the steps involved.

How a Dental Implant Surgery Is Done

1. Exam and Remove Damaged Tooth

Before any surgical procedure is performed, there is an extensive exam performed that includes your overall systemic health as well the health of your teeth and gums. If there is a damaged tooth to be removed, that is done during a surgical procedure using local anesthetic, and a bone graft may be placed at this time as well.

2. Assessing Jawbone for Surgery

After any tooth removal and graft placement, the bone must be reevaluated before implant placement. This may include radiographs and and an exam to ensure both bone and gum tissue are ready for the procedure and will integrate with the implant.

3. Placement of the Implant Post

During the first surgery, an incision on the gums of the implant site is used to expose the jawbone. The bone is then prepared by using several drills to make space for the post. The post is then placed and a temporary denture or implant cap can be fitted to protect the implant. A suture is then used to reattach the gums while the implant is healing which may take up to six months or longer.

4. Set Abutment

Eventually the implant will fuse with the bone during a process called osseointegration. When this is complete, your dentist will perform minor surgery to expose the implant and begin the process of fabricating a final restoration, whether it be a crown, bridge, or attachment for a denture.

5. Position Crown or Bridge

Your gums dental implantneed to heal for another one to two weeks before attachment of the permanent restoration. From the impressions, your dentist will create a crown or bridge to match your natural teeth or a denture to replace all your missing teeth. Once your jawbone has healed and is strong enough, the permanent restoration will be placed.
