The brakes in your car are essential in an emergency, and you don’t want to find out they’re not working properly when you need them the most. So how can you tell when your brakes need to be replaced? Stillwater Auto Clinic in Stillwater, MN has been providing expert car repair since 1977, and they have tips on how to tell if you need new brakes.

What are the signs you should look for?

  • Look for wear. Check between the spokes of your wheel and look at the brake pad that is pressed against the metal rotor. You need at least a quarter inch of pad to have a sufficient amount for safe braking. If you have less, then you should take your car to your auto shop for new brakes.
  • Listen for noise. When the brake pads are worn to a certain point, the indicator—a piece of metal embedded in the brake pad—is exposed. The next time you are driving, roll down the windows and listen for a high-pitched screech when you apply the brakes. If you hear this sound, it is the indicator rubbing against the rotor, and that means it’s time to get new pads.
  • Pulling to one side. If your car pulls to one side when you’re braking, it can mean your brakes have been wearing unevenly. When this happens, you will need a brake replacement.
  • Grinding sounds. If you hear a grinding noise, it can mean that your pads have worn down completely and it is the sound of the metal brake discs rubbing against the rotors. Once you hear this noise, you will need to visit your car repair shop for new brakes.
  • You feel vibrations. If you press the brakes and you feel vibrations, it’s an indication that your rotors may be warped. Visit your auto mechanic to have the problem corrected.
