Summer flies can be a constant nuisance to your horses, and while fly masks are a great solution to keeping them comfortable, it’s important to use them correctly. Your horse’s eyes are very sensitive, and fly masks can become hazardous without proper pet care practices. Keep in mind some essential do’s and don’ts to ensure your horse’s fly mask serves its purpose and keeps your horse happy.

Do:

Clean Them Regularly

One of the most important pet care rules of fly masks is to clean them before each use. If dirt, grime, and bacteria build up, they can easily transfer to your horse’s eyes through contact. This can lead to infection and other serious issues that affect their vision.

Check the Fit

pet careTo get the best results, your horse’s mask needs to be tight enough to keep flies out but not so tight as to cause pain. Gradually tighten the mask until there’s a comfortable fit, and make sure to leave space around the ears so the mask doesn’t rub and irritate the skin.

Don’t:

Keep It on All Day

Flies aren’t always around, and your horse needs a break. Take the mask off periodically, especially at night when there aren’t any flies around. Keep your horse company while it’s off, and make sure to clean around their eyes before putting it back on.

Neglect the Ears

Gnats can be a problem for your horse’s ears, so you may need to invest in a fly mask that includes ear covers. The horse may be hesitant at first, so speak with pet care professionals about different options and methods to keep their ears safe and ensure they’re comfortable.
