Whether you’re shopping for meat in a grocery store or dining out at a steakhouse, you’ll find there are many cuts of steak available. Each type offers various flavors, percentages of fat, and ideal cook times. Before you select a choice from the menu, consider these facts about these five popular cuts of steak.

5 Steak Cuts to Consider for Dinner

1. Top Sirloin

Top sirloin steaks are taken from the thickest part of the filet of beef, and they differ from regular sirloins because the bone, tenderloin, and bottom round muscles have been removed. It is very tender and well-marbled with fat.

2. Ribeye

steakRibeyes come from a cow's rib section and are highly marbled, with pockets of fat throughout the steak. Because of that, they have a vibrant flavor and are quite tender.

3. New York Strip

This cut of steak comes from near the rear end of the steer, right behind the ribs. It tends to be moderately tender with a beefy flavor. It has less fat than other cuts, which makes it easier to cook.

4. Tenderloin

Also known as filet mignon, this is the leanest and most tender of all cuts. Low in fat, it also has a mild flavor, but its buttery texture makes it a favorite at steakhouses. Its thick cut comes from a steer’s short loin, behind the ribs.

5. T-Bone

This cut gets its name from the T-shaped bone that separates a piece of tenderloin and a piece of strip to make this unique two-in-one steak. The thickest part is exceptionally tender while the other is juicy and flavorful.
