September is National Gum Care Month, which means now is the perfect time to review your oral hygiene habits. Are you taking proper care of your teeth, tongue, and gums? Do you know how to prevent gingivitis? And could you recognize the symptoms of periodontitis? If not, don’t worry. The friendly team at Anchorage Dental Center can answer all your questions. Here, a knowledgeable family dentist from their practice shares a few facts everyone should know about gingivitis and periodontitis in honor of National Gum Care Month.

Identifying the Early Signs of Gum Disease

Gum disease, often called periodontal disease, has several stages. The earliest stage is called gingivitis, which is essentially inflammation of the gums. If left untreated, gingivitis can advance to periodontitis, which poses the risk of tooth loss and other serious complications.

Preventing Gum Disease

The single most effective way to prevent gum disease is by taking care of your mouth. This includes brushing with a toothpaste that contains fluoride at least twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and visiting a dentist every six months for a comprehensive exam and professional cleaning. It is also wise to maintain a balanced diet. Limit your consumption of foods high in sugar, like juice and soda, and stock up on items that are packed with calcium, like dairy products, to keep enamel strong.

If it’s been a while since your last teeth cleaning, use National Gum Care Month to get back on track.
