With roughly 70 percent of Americans falling in to the overweight and obese categories, it is important we begin to embrace the facts for losing weight. With that being said, not everyone follows the same path to achieve this. Finding out what works for you, along with what research says about those who have lost weight and kept it off for a period of time is crucial.  So what can Dietitians share to those struggling to lose weight?

5 Tips to Achieve Weight Loss from a Dietitian

  1. Eat more veggies.  You've heard it before…. and it still holds true.  If you want to lose weight and keep it off you need to incorporate more vegetables in to your life. Trying them several different ways could be your golden ticket for loving veggies. Try roasted brussels sprouts and carrots drizzled with olive oil or riced cauliflower in place of rice. Embrace the vegetables and you’re on your way!
  2. Don’t Out-Exercise your Diet.  In other words don’t eat high-fat, high calorie foods to then spend all day in the gym trying to work off those calories.  This is not a good match and doesn’t work for sustained weight loss.
  3. Be Ready to Work Hard.  To accomplish this for the long-term it takes dedication and determination.  Losing weight takes time and to be successful may require many changes in your current lifestyle.  For example, limiting your alcohol calories, tracking your intake, or prepping meals in your free time could all be ways towards a successful weight loss journey.
  4. Use the scale.  Using it daily or weekly for check ins provides an easy way to measure how you are following your routine.  There will be fluctuations, but by avoiding the scale, you will most likely be moving in the opposite direction.  In fact, regular weighing was an important piece of those studied as part of the National Weight Control Registry who were successful at maintaining their weight long term.
  5. Don’t give up.  No matter what you have tried to do in the past, there is still a way.  Surround yourself with experts who can support you and help you develop a new lifestyle. It takes practice to lose weight and with practice will coming stumbling blocks….. Just don’t quit trying!
