Whether you wash your clothes or use a laundry service, it’s important to understand how each of your fabrics should be treated. Some are best dry cleaned while others must be machine washed cold. Others should never be exposed to bleach or put into a dryer. Use this guide to help you decide whether to tackle your laundry at a laundromat or utilize a laundry service.

Understanding Different Types of Fabrics & How to Clean Them

Cottonlaundry service

Cotton is machine washable and safe to put in a dryer, and white and light-colored cotton fabrics should be washed in hot water. To prevent shrinkage, wash with as little agitation as possible. Deep- or brightly-colored cotton clothes should be washed in cold water to preserve their colors.

Linen

Regular linen fabrics can be washed in cold water in a washing machine on the gentle cycle, but embroidered or lacy items should be hand-washed. Never use bleach, and do not put linens in a dryer. Instead, line dry them in the sun.

Silk

It is recommended that silk materials be dry cleaned, but some clothing labels will say it’s safe to hand wash them in cold water. Never use bleach or put silk clothes in a dryer. When in doubt, trust a professional laundry service to handle delicate silk items.

Wool

Wool fabrics must be washed on gentle or dry cleaned. Turn the fabric inside out before cleaning it to preserve its shape and color. It should then be dried flat. Pests are attracted to wool, so be careful of how and where you store it.
