Bringing a tree home from the nursery can feel a lot like adding a member to your family. As you choose a location for it, take care of it, and watch it grow, you develop a connection with nature. However, arborists warn that factors like choosing the wrong location could spell trouble for the small sapling. Here are three factors to consider before choosing a spot for your foliage.

What to Think About Before Planting a Tree

1. Tree Type

Every tree is different, which means they have different sunlight, watering, and space requirements. While some are crossbred to remain small, others are capable of growing taller than your home.

Opt for a location that will give your new tree the right amount of sunlight and water, and avoid trees you will be tempted to cut down after a few years of growth. To determine how much water your tree would get in any given spot, place a rain gauge in the location to track moisture. Avoid planting foliage in areas where water would be hard to control, such as at the bottom of a hill or areas near french drains or waterspouts.

2. Proximity to Your Home

arboristAs beautiful as trees are, arborists explain that their roots can be harmful to your underground plumbing and your home’s foundation.

For this reason, they recommend planting small trees that will grow less than 30 feet high at least 8-10 feet away from your house, medium trees at least 15 feet away, and large trees that will grow over 70 feet at least 20 feet from any part of your home.

3. Location Of Septic Tank & Drain Field

Tree roots can also be hard on septic tanks and drain fields, so find the location of these plumbing elements before you plant. Over time, roots can infiltrate the drain field, making the water drain faster than it can filter properly.

Tree roots can also damage the septic tank itself, causing dangerous leaks. If you aren’t sure about the location of your septic tank, use a metal detector to quickly find the edges of the tank, and mark them with small stakes.
