Everyone wants to see clearly and have the sharpest vision possible. The LASIK surgery team at Midwest Eye Center: A Division of TriState Centers for Sight, which is based in Crestview Hills, KY, and serves the Greater Cincinnati Area and Northern Kentucky community, specializes in all types of eye care. They recommend maintaining excellent eyesight with preventive strategies you can use at work and home.

LASIK Team’s Top Tips for Better Vision

1. Take Breaks From Your Phone

It’s easy to get caught up in your favorite apps and social media. However, too much time on your smartphone can cause headaches, blurred vision, and dry eye. Avoid these symptoms by taking a break from your screen every 20 minutes. Reset your vision by staring at a faraway object for at least 20 seconds. You can also try closing your eyes for 30-60 seconds at a time.

2. Avoid Screen Problems at Work

Many people spend their workdays on a computer. Consistent staring and squinting at a laptop or desktop contributes to eye soreness and muscle strain. Allow your vision to recover by resting your eyes every 20 minutes and taking a break from screens at lunchtime.

Further protect your eyes by arranging your desk and screen appropriately. Ensure your monitor is 20-24 inches away from your face. Adjust your computer’s brightness settings, so graphics and text are not too bright or dim. Use blinds or shades to avoid glare, though anti-glare screens and eyeglasses are also available.

3. Wear Sunglasses Year Round

It's essential to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays in the summer. It's also important to wear sunglasses year round. Glare from the sun, especially when reflecting off of snow, can damage your eyesight during winter. If you have a vision condition, consider prescription shades. They will help you see better while driving, reading, and engaging in outdoor activities.

4. Remove Contacts at Home

LASIKEven if your contacts are moist and comfortable, overuse can lead to infection and dry eye. Take them out in the evening and at night. Switch to a pair of glasses to give your eyes a break.

5. Practice Eye Exercises

Give eye muscles a workout to maintain their health and strength. Figure 8s, near and far focus therapy, and focus change activities are some of the ways you can prevent vision conditions from developing. If you have questions about the right exercises for your needs, talk to your optometrist.

Even if you practice these tips, you may still need assistance with your vision.
