You have likely heard friends or family members boast about their 20/20 vision. You know they see very well, but what does the term actually mean? Dr. L R Gabe in Show Low, AZ, and his team explain 20/20 vision and how it relates to your own vision examinations

20/20 Vision: What It Means for Glasses and Contacts Wearers

How Did 20/20 Vision Originate?

vision examinationsMuch of modern optometry traces back to a Dutch doctor named Herman Snellen. Born in 1834, Dr. Snellen created what is now recognized as a vision test chart. When you go have a vision examination, the eye doctor likely has you read letters off of a version of this chart. When a patient is reading this chart, an eye doctor can compare their vision to someone with “normal vision.”

This is where the term 20/20 comes in. A person with 20/20 vision can see what should normally be seen at a distance of 20 feet, according to the American Optometric Association. When someone has 20/50 vision, for example, they can see at 20 feet what someone with normal vision can see at 50 feet.

Is That All It Takes to Prescribe My Glasses?

While the Snellen chart plays a big role in determining your lens prescription during your vision examinations, there are many factors at play. For example, you could have astigmatism, problems with depth perception, poor peripheral vision, and other issues. By putting all of these details together during an eye exam, your eye doctor can prescribe the best possible eye care for you.
