If nothing happens when you adjust the thermostat, you may wonder if you need air conditioning repair. However, the problem may be the thermostat and not the HVAC system. Below is some information on how to tell if the thermostat is the issue, so you can assess the problem before bringing in an expert.

How to Assess a Thermostat Problem Before Scheduling Air Conditioning Repair

1. Check the Power Source

If the thermostat display looks distorted or blank, it may be disconnected. Though many models have batteries for backup power, your thermostat may have been running on its supplemental store for a while. Have an air conditioning repair professional reconnect the power source, and replace the dead batteries in case of a power outage.

2. Assess the Signal

The circuit can become disconnected if the wall unit was bumped or otherwise disrupted, so look inside the unit to check for loose wires. Those with a smart thermostat should also check its internet connection because that’s how it communicates with the HVAC system.

3. Clean the Lever or Dial

Over time, the levers and dials that set the temperature on mechanical thermostats collect dust and debris, and they may get stuck. Clean out any dust, and see if that loosens the stuck parts. Use a dust cloth to wipe down the cover and the lever or knob every month to prevent sticking.
