Good sign advertising will go a long way when it comes to representing your business to the public. By the same token, poor signage design can make your business suffer, by giving people the wrong impression or making yourself look unprofessional. Whether you’re making custom signs for parking lots, your shopfront, or another location, avoid these five mistakes during the design process:

5 Mistakes to Avoid on Your Custom Sign

1. Weird Fonts

Engaging fonts will help make your sign stand out, but don’t select anything too bizarre. Overly stylized fonts might not be very readable. Inappropriate ones may also make your business appear unprofessional.

2. Too Many Messages

The most effective signs just have one or two purposes. For example, it could have your store hours on it, advertise a special deal, or highlight various product options. Avoid saying too much on one sign, or your audience might not end up understanding any of it. If there’s a lot you want to communicate, split it into multiple signs.

3. Not Enough White Space

custom signsWhite space (also known as negative space) is a design term that refers to space that isn’t used by images or lettering. While it may seem boring to have too much of it, white space is crucial for making a sign more readable, and sometimes more noticeable. Consider allowing more space around your logo or between phrases, for example, for a subtle yet dynamic effect.

4. Poor Letter Spacing

Good spacing between words and letters will ensure optimal readability. Make sure that all the letters on your signage have adequate spacing. If they’re too close together, it’ll look cluttered. If they’re too wide apart, it could look odd or off-putting. Either mistake will impair your custom sign’s readability. For good letter spacing, either hire a professional to design your sign or use a template.

5. Complicated Logos

Fantastic imagery can do wonders for a business sign; just make sure you don’t select anything too complicated. The best choices are often the simplest: for example, a sparse cartoon logo might look more engaging than a photograph. By choosing a simple logo, your sign will look cleaner.
