Acupuncture is one of the most widely accepted natural healing methods used today, being used for the relief of common ailments, for the prevention of disease, for some symptoms of pregnancy, during childbirth, for health promotion, for anesthesia, for removal of allergies and for other purposes. It works on the basis of meridians, energetic pathways in the body through which Qi (see above) flows. Each of these meridians corresponds to an organ in the body. When an organ is out of balance, blockages and energy disruptions will form along its meridian line. This is usually accompanied by painful areas.

After a person’s condition is diagnosed, points along the meridians are selected where there are disruptions in the energy flow. Fine acupuncture needles are inserted into these points, usually just below the skin, to remove the blockages, stimulate weak energy, or lower extra energy. The corrected energy flow returns the balance in the corresponding organ, and natural functioning returns.

Acupuncture needles are inserted quickly and almost painlessly. They are sometimes used in conjunction with heat or electric simulation. Sterile, disposable needles are always used.
