The Sartorius muscle in the anterior thigh assists other muscles in the action of hip and knee flexion, rotating the thigh outward or laterally and in abduction or moving the thigh away from the body. When trigger points are present in the Sartorius muscle there may be superficial sharp or tingling pain up and down the thigh to the inner aspect if the knee. Pain from this muscle is usually NOT a deep aching pain in the knee. When the Sartorius muscle is not considered as a source of this knee pain, degenerative knee disease is a frequent diagnosis.

Trigger points occur in the Sartorius with acute muscle overload and strain that may occur with a twisting fall. They also form in individuals involved in sports who frequently overload the Sartorius. For example, this muscle is vigorously active active during a two-legged jump through both the take-off and landing commonly used in basketball and volleyball or when flexing the knee and hip in biking.
