Summer is here at last and it’s natural to be excited about showing off your new swimsuit, going on vacation, and planning loads of fun outdoor activities! As you’re gearing up for an epic season of sun and adventure, remember the importance of protecting your skin by wearing a high SPF sunscreen.

The dermatologist and staff at Heibel Dermatology in Lincoln, NE are passionate about helping all of their patients enjoy a happy and healthy summer. Here are just a few ways wearing sunscreen will pay off big in the long run:

  • Wearing sunscreen shields your skin from UVA and UVB ultraviolet rays: The SPF (or Sun Protection Factor) rating of a sunscreen tells you how long your skin will be protected from UVA and UVB rays, and how long you’ll be able to enjoy the sun without getting sunburned. Opting for a high SPF sunscreen allows you the freedom to enjoy the sunny weather without damaging your skin or increasing your risk of skin cancer.
  • Protecting your skin helps you maintain a youthful appearance: Using a high SPF sunscreen daily helps protect your skin from unfiltered sun exposure, which is one of the leading causes of premature aging. Sunspots (also called age spots), fine lines, and wrinkles are all exacerbated by long-term sun exposure.
  • Sunscreen can prevent sun exposure from exacerbating pre-existing medical issues and skin problems: Issues like rosacea, eczema, and dermatitis can be made worse with prolonged sun exposure, but regularly wearing sunscreen can help. Acne scars and surgical scars may also become significantly more noticeable after sun exposure if you don’t regularly wear a high SPF sunscreen.

Hit the lake this summer, go on long hikes, and get your fill of outdoor fun, but make sure you protect yourself by wearing sunscreen every day and limiting your sun exposure during the hottest time of day. For more information on caring for your skin call Heibel Dermatology at (402) 488-6969
