A custom closet is a functional luxury every homeowner can benefit from. If you’re considering building a custom wardrobe, there are a few factors you’ll need to consider before getting started. Cincinnati Closets® in Covington, KY, is here to explain.

4 Custom Closet Design Rules to Follow

1. Clothing Dimensions

Know how much space your clothes will take up, whether you’re using hangers, shelves, or a combination of the two. Width is the most important factor to consider; closets and panels can range from about 14 to 24 inches. If you’re planning to hang clothing, select a broader depth because anything under 24 inches, including your shirts, jackets, and dresses, may not fit.

2. Double- & Single-Hang Sections

customclosetIt’s a good idea to take an inventory of your belongings at least once a year, particularly before embarking on a home improvement project, like a custom closet. Take stock of your clothes and the type of items you own. You’ll need to determine how many double- and single-hang sections you need based the items in your wardrobe. Shirts, slacks, and blouses typically need double-hangs, while dresses, coats, and jackets will do with single-hangs. Pull-out drawers are fantastic options to include for shorts and casual pants.

3. Shoe Storage

Some people have just a few pairs of shoes, while others have a pair for every outfit. The number of shoes in your collection can play a significant role in your custom closet design. Not only do you need to save space for a shoe rack, but if you have several pairs, you may want shelves and cubbies to keep them organized. For instance, you may wish to have separate shelves for heels, sandals, tennis shoes, and boots.

4. Seating Space

If you have the room, a walk-in closet is always preferable. This allows you to see all of your items clearly, making getting ready much more comfortable. It also provides for a seating space, which is a nice spot to put on socks and shoes, fasten buttons, and try on accessories. Incorporate a full-length mirror as well for added convenience.
