If you own a car, it’s essential to know how the different components function and their terminology so that you can understand what your local mechanic is recommending. If you fail to understand, it could result in improper vehicle maintenance. This list includes some of the most commonly used words that you should know.

Essential Mechanic Terms

1. Drivetrain

MechanicThe drivetrain consists of all the parts that work in coordination to provide power to the vehicle’s wheels — not including the engine. The components will differ depending on the type of car you have and whether it is an automatic transmission, manual, front-wheel or four-wheel-drive.

2. Radiator

The radiator is a cooling system that diverts heat away from the engine so that it can work properly. The radiator holds water and coolant, which is released when the engine generates friction and heat. Once the liquid is heated, it’s sent back to the radiator where it cools again and is redistributed to again cool the engine.

3. Tune-Up

A car tune-up is a maintenance service performed by an auto repair mechanic. It typically consists of checking the car battery; compression; and replacing spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter, rotor and other components. How often you must schedule a tune-up depends on the age of your car, but it’s recommended you have it checked out if the vehicle starts feeling sluggish on the road.

4. Brake Pad

The braking system on vehicles contains various parts. The brake pads provide friction to stop or slow down the vehicle. When you press the brake pedal, pressure is applied to the car’s rotors — the shiny, flat discs behind the wheels — to help the wheels stop moving.
