The toddler years are a time for learning and development. In addition to fine-tuning their motor skills, expanding their vocabularies, and taking other steps toward independence, children need to learn a variety of social skills, including sharing. This can be a little difficult, but with the right tips and by spending time at a learning center, they will become successful at the important component of making friends and getting along with others.

How to Teach Your Child to Share

1. Reward Good Behavior

Positive reinforcement goes a lot further than punishment. In light of this, rather than focusing solely on the times when your little one acts selfishly, make sure you notice when they give their toy to another child without getting upset. For the maximum impact, it’s best if you let them do this on their own and then praise them right away.

2. Send Them to a Learning Center

They will be around kids their own age for a few hours each day—in an environment where there are lots of toys and sharing will be a necessity. They will also be supervised by trained instructors who have experience working with toddlers and will make sure each one learns this important lesson.

3. Play Referee

Particularly if your child is having trouble with the concept or has a sibling at home, it’s crucial for you to play referee to make sure they develop positive associations with sharing. Teach them how to ask another kid for their toy politely, and set timers for how long each one can play with an item before they need to swap.
