Oral surgeons recommend tooth extractions for a variety of reasons. Whether you’re removing wisdom teeth or preventing crowding, there are steps you can take at home after the procedure to ensure you are comfortable and recovering properly. Explore below what dentists say to remember and avoid.

Do:

Use ice packs.

Your doctor will apply an ice pack to your mouth after the procedure to relieve swelling. When you get home, continue this process regularly for up to 10 minutes at a time. If you don’t have an ice pack, use a frozen bag of vegetables covered in cloth.

Tooth ExtractionRest.

Your body needs time to repair to avoid infection. Relax at home for at least 24 hours after your extraction. Avoid strenuous activities for a couple of days. Ask for a note from your dentist if you need an excuse from school or work.

Allow clotting.

A clot needs to form in your tooth socket, so your wound can heal properly. Biting on gauze pads will help with this process. You can leave each piece of material in your mouth for up to four hours. If the pad becomes soaked with blood, replace it with a new one.

Don’t:

Eat solids.

Hard and solid foods, such as crackers, meat, and bagels, can cause your wound to reopen. Prevent complications by only consuming soft foods and liquids. Broth, soup, and yogurt are most appropriate for 24 hours after your treatment. You can also try pudding, mashed potatoes, or applesauce. As discomfort decreases and the extraction site heals, you may add solids again. Ask your oral surgeon when you can begin eating like normal.

Smoke.

Smoking makes your tooth extraction site heal slower. It also contributes to poor dental health. Do not use cigarettes, e-cigarettes, or cigars for a few days after the procedure. If you feel this may be difficult, consider purchasing nicotine patches before your appointment.

Suck on anything.

Sucking on candies, popsicles, or straws may cause your clot to dislodge from the tooth socket. It can also be painful. Avoid these practices for at least 24 hours. Sip on liquids slowly instead.
