Driving over potholes, gravel, or debris can lead to a bumpy ride for passengers. Car shocks and struts are important parts of your vehicle’s suspension system. Without them, it would be uncomfortable, or impossible, to drive. Both parts look similar but serve different functions. To not confuse the two, below is a brief guide to differences between them.

Car Shocks Absorb Suspension Energy

Harrison-Arkansas-car-shocksCar shocks are pistons in sealed tubes filled with liquid or gas. When you hit a bump in the road, the shocks absorb suspension energy. By consuming the energy, shocks prevent tires and wheels from lifting off the ground as you drive and vibrating on the pavement. Although car shocks aren’t a necessary part of the vehicle’s suspension system, they ensure a smoother, safer ride. For the shock to work properly, oil is pumped through numerous valves. When shocks are old or damaged, oil will start leaking from the valves. Many motorists choose to replace standard shocks with coilover models. Unlike standard shocks, they feature coil springs on the top of the tube. This makes it possible to adjust ride height and shock rebound.

Struts Prevent the Car From Sinking to the Ground

Car shocks and coilovers benefit your car, but they aren’t necessary to get it up and running. Struts serve a similar function to shocks. By moving oil through valves, they also dampen the movement of the spring to keep tires and wheels from bouncing. Unlike shocks, struts also support the weight of the vehicle. Without them, the wheels would buckle and fall, making it impossible to drive. Struts shouldn’t be confused with coilover shocks, as both feature a coil spring exterior. Some strut models, however, have the spring inside the assembly. Oil leaking from valves is a warning sign that it’s time to schedule strut replacement.
