Fall is only weeks away, and the cold weather will be following soon behind. As furnace and fireplace use increase, so do the chances of a house fire. To help you stay safe this year, ServiceMaster Fire & Water Restoration Services, an experienced smoke and fire damage repair company in Lexington, KY, offers the following fire safety tips for fall.

Fire Safety Tips for Fall

1. Smoke Detectors

Test every smoke detector in your house and replace batteries as necessary. You should have one installed in every bedroom and in the hallway outside each sleeping area on every level of the house. Thus, a four-bedroom, bi-level home needs six smoke detectors. A good rule of thumb is to test the units every time you set the clocks back or forward, or once every six months.

2. Fireplace

Never leave a fire unattended, and store fuel and other combustibles at least three feet away from the hearth. Never burn more than three natural logs at once, and never burn more than one artificial log, which generates more heat. Never mix the two types.

3. Chimney

Creosote is a dark, oily, flammable substance secreted by burning wood. It collects on the inside of your chimney and can ignite as hot embers drift past. A chimney fire can easily spread to the attic, so it's critical that you have your chimney cleaned regularly.

4. HalloweenFire damage in Lexington, KY

Instead of using candles in your Jack O'Lantern, use a flashlight or LED lamp instead. These are much safer than an open flame and are much less likely to result in fire damage. Unplug any holiday lighting and extension cords before you go to bed, and make sure all decorations are made with fire retardant materials.

5. Space Heaters

Remove all dust and debris from the grille of a space heater before use; dust is actually flammable and could ignite under high temperatures. Never leave a space heater running while you are away or sleeping, and give it at least three feet of clearance in all directions.

The fire safety tips above will help you keep your home safe during the cold weather seasons.
