Adopting a new pet is always exciting, but bringing your furry friend home can pose certain challenges. If you already have pets, for example, you cannot simply let the new pet roam freely around the house. Otherwise, chaos will likely ensue. Fortunately, the friendly staff at Animal Care Center of Fairfield is here to help. Below, a veterinarian from their team explains how to welcome a new pet into your home.

How to Introduce a New Pet to an Existing One

1. If Both Pets Are Dogs

veterinarianMost dogs are relatively social, but there are always exceptions, especially when it comes to certain breeds. Additionally, even the friendliest dogs can get upset when another dog encroaches on their territory. For this reason, it’s best to introduce your dogs on neutral territory, like a nearby park. With help from a friend, take both for a walk together to see how they interact with one another. As long as they seem fairly copacetic, it’s okay to move everyone into the yard and then into the house.

2. If Both Pets Are Cats

Cats should always get the opportunity to smell each other before they are put in the same room together. Keep the new cat in its carrier, and let your current cat smell him or her through it. Once both animals seem comfortable, consider letting the new cat out of the carrier. Make sure he has his own toys and bedding, though, because it is unlikely your current cat will want to share.

3. If One Pet Is a Dog & One Is a Cat

Keep dogs and cats separated for the first few days that they are home together. This will allow them to get used to each other’s scents gradually. Once you’re ready to introduce them, keep the dog on a leash, and let the cat roam free. It may be a bit chaotic at first, but after a few introductions like this, they should eventually become comfortable with the new arrangement and can both roam freely without causing trouble.
