As much as you love your pets, the odors they can leave behind aren’t always the most lovable. This is particularly true when a bathroom accident leaves your carpet with an unsightly stain — not to mention a foul smell. Thankfully, as Cincinnati, OH’s Accent Flooring explains, such odors don’t have to be permanent. Here’s how you can solve this common problem.

New Stains

carpetIf you’re lucky, you’ll discover the stain left behind by your pet’s accident while the area is still wet. Fast action is essential to clean up the carpet and keep a permanent stain from forming.

To soak up the urine, cover the affected area with a thick layer of paper towels, then cover the paper towels with newspaper. Apply pressure to this pad for a full minute to soak up the pet urine, and repeat the process with fresh paper towels and newspaper until most of the liquid has been absorbed. Finally, rinse the area with cold water and blot it dry.

Set Stains

Homeowners aren’t always lucky enough to discover a pet’s accident before it has dried and the stain has set in the carpet. In these situations, a carpet cleaner will be required to remove the stain. Don’t use a steam cleaner, as the heat could cause the stain to become permanent.

After using the carpet cleaner, apply specialized stain and pet odor removers to the area to eliminate any lingering stains and smells. Keep in mind, however, that severe accidents that soaked into the padding will likely require a total replacement of the affected carpeting.
