It’s time for back to school. Now that the class bells are ringing, parents are searching for the most delicious and healthy snacks to pack for their child’s lunches, including for their before- and after-school programs. Take the following list to the grocery store, so your kids are fueled and satisfied until dinner.

Nutritious Choices for Before- & After-School Programs

1. Trail Mix

Trail mix is easy to find, simple to pack, and contains all the nutrition your child needs to stay happy and healthy. Stay away from products containing chocolate candy. Choose mixes with dried fruit, nuts, and granola instead. You can also make your own. If your little one dislikes raisins, there are several alternatives. Try dried cranberries, apricots, or bananas.

2. Fruit Salad

Fruit salad is sweet and delicious. It also contains essential vitamins, including A, C, and B. Cut up 3-4 favorites and mix them together. Some of the most popular choices include grapes, strawberries, and oranges. Place them in a zipped bag or plastic container.

3. Ants on a Log

Cortlandt Manor Before and After School ProgramAnts on a log are a favorite at before- and after-school programs. Not only does it look like little raisin critters are walking along a celery path, but the snack contains nutrients like protein, calcium, and dietary fiber. Cut stalks of celery into halves. Place peanut butter or cream cheese into the grooves of the stalk and add dried fruit on top.

4. Apple Sandwiches

Apple sandwiches are tasty and will keep your child full for hours. They’re also simple to eat. Make them by cutting a red or green apple into circular slices. Spread peanut butter on one piece, then add golden raisins, cranberries, or granola. Top with another apple circle.

5. Cucumber Roll-Ups

If your kid likes savory snacks, they’ll love cucumber roll-ups. They include a combination of fresh cucumber, deli meat, and creamy Greek yogurt. Begin by slicing a cucumber into thin pieces with a mandoline. While they dry on a paper towel, create a mixture of yogurt, lime juice, salt, and pepper. Spread the cream on top and add fresh herbs as desired. Add ham or turkey, then roll them up. If you’d like, you can secure them with a toothpick. Keep them refrigerated until it’s time to add them to your child’s lunchbox.

By switching these snacks out throughout the week, your child will never get bored or hungry.
