The days are getting a bit shorter, and the nights are more crisp. Fall is on it’s way! That means ~ football season! No matter who your favorite team is, chances are you will be doing a little tailgating or having friends over to watch the big game. Dr. Joy Lunan wants to share her tips to keep these events tooth-friendly.

It seems everyone’s go to items for grilling are hot dogs and hamburgers, but Dr. Lunan would prefer if you grilled things like veggies, fish and lean meats. Lean meats contain iron, which is great for your oral health. Chicken has niacin which helps to prevent bad breath and mouth sores.

If grilling vegetables isn’t your thing, try serving a vegetable tray with raw options instead. These fiber rich foods help to stimulate saliva flow, which washes away sugars and bacteria from your teeth, in turn helps prevent cavities. Try carrots and broccoli – they are the highest in fiber content.

Cheese and crackers are always a hit and a must-have at any proper tailgating party. Cheese is a great source of calcium, a healthy mineral your teeth love. Try opting for whole wheat or whole grain crackers if you can.

We all love the sweets table, but try to avoid anything too gooey or sugary like brownies or cookies. Try a sugar-free cookie recipe instead. Maybe a dish of fresh fruit with yogurt dip will be just the thing to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Remember, you can still have your favorite things at your game day parties, just be sure to brush your teeth afterwards if they are not so healthy. If you don’t have a toothbrush handy then even swishing with a bit of water can be helpful.

Dr. Lunan hopes you have a great tailgating season! Good luck to your favorite team!  Call us for more information.  203-598-7920 www.middleburydentist.com    Click here to check out our reviews.
