Yellow fever is a disease commonly contracted in South America and Africa. This virus, caused by mosquito bites, can result in a myriad of symptoms such as a high fever, chills, headaches, and muscle aches. Since roughly 15% of individuals who contract yellow fever become gravely ill, it is recommended that those traveling to high-risk regions embrace mosquito bite prevention techniques and receive a vaccine that protects against the condition. Since the United States currently has a shortage of this travel vaccine, here’s what you should know to stay safe.

Understanding the Shortage of Yellow Fever Vaccines

What’s the Status With Yellow Fever Vaccines?

VaccineSanofi Pasteur is the only company that currently manufactures a yellow fever vaccine, known as YF-Vax. In February, this organization announced a temporary shortage until the end of the year. In the interim, they are producing a comparable vaccination known as Stamaril that is being distributed to 70 different countries. Many travel clinics will have Stamaril available and others may be able to offer YF-Vax based on a previous supply.

What Should You Do if You Need This Vaccination for Upcoming Travel?

It’s important to remember that this vaccine is still crucial to maintain your health when traveling to specific countries. As such, find a local travel clinic in your area that offers either YF-Vax or Stamaril. The vaccine should be administered at least 10 days before your expected travel date. If you’re having difficulty finding a clinic with this specific shot, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s online database
