Dental cavities can happen to anyone, including those who brush and floss regularly. Individuals who have never needed a filling are actually in the minority. In recent years, researchers determined that more than 90% of American adults between 20 and 64 years old have had cavities in their permanent teeth. Fortunately, repairing damage caused by decay is relatively easy—as long as you seek care before it becomes extensive. Even if you are not due for a dental exam, make an appointment if your teeth exhibit any signs of decay.

3 Signs a Tooth Has a Cavity

1. Tooth Pain or Sensitivity

Cavities can cause persistent toothaches or sporadic pain that has no apparent cause. You may also experience sensitivity in the damaged tooth when consuming hot or cold beverages or when biting down on hard food items.

2. White or Brown Spots

cavitiesWhite spots that appear on the teeth are an early sign of decay and can be indicative of internal tooth damage. These spots develop as the result of mineral loss. As the decay progresses, brown spots can develop, as well. Brown spots are a sign that the enamel has started to disintegrate.

3. Visible Pits or Holes

If left untreated, cavities will expand until they eventually break through the surface of the tooth. Any jagged edges or visible holes in the teeth warrant immediate dental care because they are a sign of severe decay.
