Excited about your new prescription glasses? To maximize their longevity and ensure they continue to look like new, they should be cleaned carefully, and only with materials that are approved for this use. Here are a few tips to keep your glasses sparkling—and safe!

Do:

Use a microfiber cloth.

prescription glassesThe only cloth you should use to clean your prescription glasses is a microfiber cloth approved for this use. Your optician will provide one when you get a new pair.

Use warm water.

Rinse your glasses with warm water before using a cloth to wash away dirt and dust. Carry a small bottle of eyeglass cleaner in your car or bag for those times when water isn’t available.

Be gentle.

Rub the inside and the outside of the lenses gently to prevent scratching and to ensure you avoid loosening the lenses inside the frames.

Clean the frames, too.

Your frames can get dirt, oil, and makeup on them. Use a soft cloth to clean along the earpieces, and especially the bridge of the nose and the underside of the lenses. If you have frames with nose pieces, wipe those off as well, and consider having those replaced if they don’t come clean on the back.

Don’t:

Use a paper-based product.

Avoid using toilet paper or paper towels  at all costs! Even the softest paper towel or toilet paper will scratch the surface. It might not be noticeable right away, but repeated cleanings over time will eventually damage your lenses.

Use your shirt.

Your shirt is a convenient option in a pinch, but resist the temptation. Small fibers in the fabric can scratch your lenses and special coatings.

Use harsh cleaners.

Window cleaners do a fantastic job on glass, but this is too harsh for your prescription glasses. These products shouldn’t be near your eyes, and they can damage your anti-reflective coating.
