With summer heat finally starting to wane and cool autumn days quickly approaching, people are spending less time in their swimming pools. However, just because the pools aren't used as much doesn’t mean that they need less care. Before you can shut down the pool for the winter, there's a short checklist you'll need to complete. Here, the team at Distinctive Swimming Pools, of Washington, CT, shares what to do.

5 Tips for Prepping Pools for Cold Weather

1. Clean & Store Accessories

First, prep the pool accessories for storage. You can do this by cleaning them with a diluted bleach mixture to remove all grime and mildew, and then dry them completely. You should also deflate air-filled toys, so they'll last longer.

2. Lower Water Level

Pull the plug on the pool to lower the water level a little bit. It should fall below the skimmer, so the pipes aren't affected by ice over the winter. You don't want it to be too low, or else it’ll dry out the pool cover.

3. Adjust pH & Alkalinity Levels

PoolsThe pH and alkalinity levels should always be carefully maintained to keep it safe and comfortable for use. The pH level determines how basic or acidic it is. Alkalinity neutralizes acids, so they don't burn or sting your eyes. Before shutting down the pool this fall, make sure it has the necessary levels according to your pool type.

4. Skim It

Skim the surface carefully and vacuum out the whole area to make sure there are no leaves or debris trapped inside.

5. Cover It

All pools need a good cover to protect them from winter storms and falling leaves, but it’s also necessary for the safety of pets and children. When the pool isn't in use, keeping it covered can prevent any water related accidents.
