An overheating engine won’t just force you to pull over. If the issue is bad enough, you could wind up needing to either replace the entire component or buy a new vehicle, both of which are expensive solutions to a preventable problem. The best way to stop this issue before it happens is to learn to recognize signs of overheating, says High Point Tire & Automotive of North Carolina. Below, the auto service lists three indicators the engine is getting too hot.

An Auto Service’s Guide to 3 Indicators the Engine Is Overheating

1. Steam Is Coming From Under the Hood

Although it’s one of the clearest signs the engine is too hot, it’s also one of the most important to watch for. At this point, the component has already overheated, and you need to pull over right away. Turn the car off immediately and open the windows. Call for a tow truck to get your car to an auto service station and wait at least 30 minutes before you try to pop the hood. Otherwise, you might burn yourself on the steam.

2. It Doesn’t Have a Lot of Power

auto serviceWhen you step on the accelerator, whether it’s to give the car more speed or power up an incline, the engine should respond accordingly. If it doesn’t feel like it has a lot of energy, it’s likely getting too hot. This is because the pistons that power it along are expanding too much. Look for other indicators of overheating, such as the temperature gauge on the dashboard going into the red zone.

3. There’s Coolant on the Pavement

If you’ve noticed a puddle of coolant on the ground underneath the car, you might have a leak in the system. This crucial liquid prevents the vehicle’s parts from overheating, so the leak should be fixed right away before you attempt to drive regularly. However, it could also mean the engine got too hot and the coolant actually boiled out of its container and onto the pavement.

If you notice any of these signs, have a mechanic examine the vehicle right away. High Point Tire & Automotive will quickly fix the issue and get you back on the road again.
