After cosmetic surgery, it’s best to take it easy for a few days and allow yourself plenty of time to recover. Whether you’ve had a face-lift or rhinoplasty, your body needs time to heal. Take a look at a few aftercare tips to follow, and–of course—always listen to the advice of your doctor.

How to Recover After Cosmetic Surgery

1. Protect Your Skin From the Sun & Environmental Factors

cosmetic surgerySun exposure may cause discoloration or damage at the site of your incisions, inflammation, and scarring. Avoid time in direct sunlight, wear sunscreen as directed by your doctor, and never leave home without sunglasses and a hat if you must be outside. Refrain from taking a dip in the pool and exposure to strong chemicals and smoky, windy, or dusty conditions.

2. Rest

Cosmetic procedures may not fall under the category of major surgery, but you still need to give your body plenty of rest and recovery time. Limit exercise to moderate levels, get plenty of sleep, and allow others to help you out around the house. Most patients can return to work and normal activity within 2–6 weeks, depending on the surgery. Practicing relaxation techniques, such as meditation and yoga, are beneficial as well to help you recover.

3. Avoid Alcohol & Smoking

Alcohol depresses the immune system, making it harder for your body to heal. It also dehydrates the body and makes it harder for the liver to process toxins and medication out of the system. Smoking, on the other hand, deprives your body of essential oxygen for healing and is detrimental to your health and immune system. So, steer clear of both during this time. If your doctor prescribes pain medication, ask if it will interact with any other medication you’re already taking.

4. Eat Well

Proper nutrition will speed up the healing process. Protein and vitamins A and C help your body build new tissue and support your immune system. It’s best to choose a plant-based diet supplemented with lean meats and seafood. Doctors also recommend drinking six to eight 8 ounce glasses of water a day.
