Summer is approaching, which means people across the country are preparing for the greatest American pastime: the summer road trip. Of course, gas prices are much higher than they used to be, which might be a damper on the number of miles you can drive, but a few simple tricks can help you get the most out of every gallon. The Charlotte AutoFair Produced by Hornets Nest Region, AACA, the Southeast's favorite auto show, has some tips for improving your fuel efficiency, wherever you're headed this summer.

  • If at all possible, put luggage in the trunk, not on top of the car. This may be difficult for some models, or for longer trips, but storing items up top increases drag and makes your vehicle less aerodynamic.
  • Always follow at a safe distance. Tail-gating not only increases the odds of rear-ending somebody, but it also forces you to do a lot of braking and accelerating, which will quickly destroy your gas mileage.
  • Using your cruise control will help you keep a steady pace, which is best for fuel efficiency.
  • Before you head out, check your tire tread and air pressure. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that under-inflated tires can seriously impede your gas mileage.
  • If you're driving an antique car, see about getting a tune-up before your trip begins. An out-of-tune engine isn't effectively using its energy, which means wasting the gas you paid for.
