When you are carrying a baby, you have to take extra good care of yourself. How you treat your body can have a big impact on how your little one grows and develops inside the womb. The women’s health professionals at Hilltop Obstetrics & Gynecology discuss what you shouldn’t do while pregnant.
4 Things to Avoid While Pregnant
1. Soaking in Hot Tubs
While sitting in a hot tub can be very relaxing, it isn’t something you should do while pregnant. The hot water can raise your body temperature, causing hyperthermia. This condition can increase the risk of miscarriage and neural tube defects.
2. Skimping on Sleep
Pregnancy can change your hormone levels and make you more stressed, so adequate rest is essential. Aim to get seven to nine hours of sleep every night. If you feel tired during the day, don’t hesitate to lie down and take a short nap.
3. Consuming Raw Meat & Fish
Eating undercooked meat and fish, including sushi, during pregnancy can cause foodborne illnesses. If you develop these illnesses, there will be a higher chance of miscarriage and birth defects. To avoid any issues, make sure the meat you consume is fully cooked.
4. Drinking Too Much Caffeine
While you don’t have to completely give up caffeine while you’re pregnant, you shouldn’t overdo it. If you drink too many caffeinated beverages, you could increase your blood pressure and heart rate, which can be dangerous during pregnancy. Too much caffeine can also increase your risk of having a miscarriage. Women’s health professionals advise limiting your caffeine intake to less than 200 mg a day, which equals a 12 oz cup of coffee.
