It’s exciting to see a beautiful new lawn when you have sod installed, but the work is just beginning. The sod now needs to take root and grow well to ensure you have a healthy lawn in the future. To help the greenery thrive, the team at Arkansas Sod & Turf Farm in North Little Rock, AR, have explained how to care for the young lawn.

How to Take Care of Newly Installed Sod

1. Watering

Liberal watering is vital in the initial period and should always be done in the morning or middle of the day. Watering at night or in the evening makes the new lawn susceptible to fungal diseases. For the first ten days, water each day for 15 to 20 minutes. For the following two weeks, water every other day for 30 minutes to encourage deep root growth. In three to four weeks after the sod has been laid, cut back the watering to twice per week.

2. Fertilizing

sodAsk your sod farm supplier which fertilizer they recommend for the seedlings and get a rotary spreader to apply the fertilizer. Wait until six to eight weeks after the lawn has been installed to fertilize. Feeding the seedlings before this point could create an imbalance by overwhelming them with nutrients.

3. Mowing

Don’t mow the lawn until it has grown a few inches long. This will be about a month after the lawn is installed. Avoid walking or putting any weight on the lawn, if possible. Only walk on it if you need to move sprinklers around. Keep pets and children off the lawn completely for the first month.
