As the gardening season comes to an end and temperatures start to drop, now is the time to close your garden down for the year. Preparation will protect your soil throughout the winter and ensure your garden is ready for healthy plant growth next spring. To help you get started, the gardening supplies team at Racine’s Feed Garden & Supply in Robertsdale, AL, share their guide for how to prepare your soil for the autumn.

Guide to Preparing Your Garden for Autumn

Make Soil Amendments

gardening suppliesAdjust the soil’s pH now, as having multiple months will help the soil balance out well in time for spring. Start by pulling all the weeds from the garden, including the roots, and by removing all other plant debris such as branches or leaves. Test the soil’s pH levels using a home test or taking a sample into a gardening supplies and testing facility. Most gardeners need a pH level between six and seven, but confirm the recommended levels based on what you’ll be planting come spring. Depending on the results of your test, add agricultural lime into the top foot of soil to raise the pH or sulfur to lower it.

Protect the Soil Surface

Protecting the soil surface will lock in nutrients and moisture while protecting the soil from low temperatures. Add a two- to four-inch layer of compost over the entire garden, then mix it into the top six inches of soil. Once the soil is well-mixed, add a two- or three-inch layer of mulch to sit on top. The mulch will keep weeds from growing in the garden during winter. If you want to prepare for spring, pick up some fertilizer along with the rest of your gardening supplies now. Fertilizing will be your first step when you need to prepare the soil for spring.
