Maybe you're moving to a new neighborhood and want the convenience of a nearby pharmacy—or perhaps your current local provider is simply closing up shop. Whatever the reason may be, if you are looking to transfer prescriptions, you have to lay some groundwork for the switch. Here’s how to prepare for transitioning pharmacies.

5 Steps for Switching Pharmacies

1. Talk to Your New Pharmacy

Inform your new pharmacist of your plans to transfer prescriptions to them. Have your drug details handy, including the prescription name, strength and RX number. You’ll also have to provide insurance information, as well as personal details including name, date of birth, address, phone number, and allergies.

2. Touch Base With Your Old Pharmacy

It may be possible for your new pharmacist to contact your previous provider directly by phone to let them know you are transferring. Some pharmacies also have websites, so you can switch online. You will likely have to sign some paperwork to confirm the transition.

3. Inform Your Doctor

pharmacyLet your physician know about any pharmacy changes. Your doctor can also inform you whether your prescriptions can be moved—some medications can’t be transferred or can only be transferred once.

4. Include Your Family

Include your family members in any pharmacy transfers. If you’re moving locations, for instance, compile a list of each person’s prescriptions and relevant medical details.

5. Be Patient

Don’t expect a prescription transition to happen overnight. Usually, the process takes a few days. Make sure you have sufficient medications you need at home beforehand.
