Renting a storage unit is a great alternative for people who are clearing out space, downsizing, or relocating. Storage facilities provide you with extra space where you can put away some of your belongings that may be reused later or which have sentimental value. However, there are several items that should not be kept in storage.

What You Can’t Store in a Storage Unit

1. Perishables

Fresh produce, pet food, and even canned goods must not be left in enclosed spaces since these will eventually rot and attract pests. While storage facilities ensure preventive measures against infestation, insects and rodents can still find a way to crawl inside. Wet or damp items can also promote mold and mildew growth that may damage your possessions.

2. Living Things

Never leavestorage unit pets and plants inside your storage unit. It’s illegal and inhumane to do so. If it requires air, light, food, and water to live, then it must not be kept in storage. Instead, bring your pets to a kennel or shelter and your plants to people who can look after them until you return.

3. Hazardous Materials

Storage unit facilities prohibit storing materials that pose safety risks and health hazards since temperatures in self-storage can fluctuate and cause a chemical reaction. Items that are combustible, explosive, corrosive, radioactive, or toxic are not allowed to be stored in sealed places. If you’re storing fuel-powered equipment, drain the gas and oil first before packing it away.

4. Illegal Items

Even if a storage unit is at your disposal, it doesn’t mean you can use it to store suspicious or illegal items, including unregistered vehicles, weapons, and stolen goods. If the facility managers notice your dubious activity, they can tip off the police to conduct an investigation.

5. Valuables

An item’s value may vary for different people, but as a rule of thumb, avoid leaving items that are priceless to you in storage units. Rather than stashing away your expensive jewelry and luxury goods in secure storage, keep them in vaults and safes to minimize the risk of loss or damage.
