When you are thinking about purchasing a dryer for your home, you’ll have a choice to make between conventional dryers and steam dryers. If used properly, neither should require frequent dryer repairs, but they do differ in terms of price and the effect of their drying. Here is a guide for deciding between the two.

How Do They Work?

Both conventional and steam dryers operate by applying intense heat to your clothes after they’ve been through the washing cycle. The high temperature forces the moisture to evaporate into the air, drying the clothes. One key difference is that steam dryers have an additional steaming cycle that conventional dryers do not have. After a heating period, water is cued up and disseminated, creating steam. Since the steam adds moisture to the clothes, there is a final heat treatment to complete the drying process.

What Are the Advantages of Each Type?

Steam

Those advantages are built into the drying system and you don’t have to do any extra work. It’s also worth noting that having the extra cycle doesn’t mean it’ll require dryer repairs at a more frequent rate.

Conventional

A major advantage of conventional dryers is that they are less expensive than their steam counterparts. Additionally, while a conventional dryer does not offer a steam cycle, you can still use a fabric softener with a pleasant scent to battle problematic odors. You can also quickly run your dry clothes through the dryer to remove some wrinkles. But remember to change your filters regularly so you can avoid dryer repair.
