Once the battery starts your car’s engine, the alternator takes over. It keeps the engine running while simultaneously charging your vehicle’s battery, computers, and electrical systems. If your battery is at full capacity but you are still experiencing electrical issues, your alternator has probably worn out. You may also notice a burning odor or a squealing engine when the alternator needs replacing.

DIY Alternator Replacement: 3 Things You Need To Know

1. Location

Find this auto part by referring to your vehicle’s pulley configuration chart. This chart is located on top of the radiator cap under the hood of your car and features the locations of all of the accessories related to the serpentine belt. This belt “drives” peripheral devices in your vehicle, including the alternator. alternator

The chart’s alternator sticker letterings vary by manufacturer; for example, it is ALT in Ford vehicles. Other models spell out the entire word. The precise alternator location also varies by manufacturer; however, it is always located in front of the engine. Most alternators feature stationary armature with rotating magnetic fields.

2. Necessary Tools & Protective Gear

Procure the tools necessary for replacement. Purchase a screwdriver and serpentine belt tool if you do not have them, as well as a socket and ratchet. Wear safety glasses among other protective gear when working on the alternator or any other part of your vehicle, including gloves and closed-toe shoes.

3. The Right Replacement

Determine the best replacement by removing your current alternator and bringing it with you to your local auto parts store. Compare the potential replacement to the old part to see if the pulley and voltage regulator match. Keep in mind that functional alternators produce 13 to 18 AC volts. Less than 13 volts always means it’s time to replace the auto part.
