When humidity is high, it can make hot days feel even warmer and also encourage mold growth in your home. Thankfully, there are a number of ways to dry out your home for better comfort and convenience. From better weatherproofing to simple maintenance on your air conditioning system, here are five easy tips for dealing with humidity.

How to Decrease Humidity

1. Weatherproof Your Home

Water can seep in from the outside, so make sure your walls, doors, and windows are tightly sealed. Adding caulk or weather stripping the doors and windows will help prevent moisture from sprinklers, dew, rain, and outside humidity from affecting your home.

2. Make Lifestyle Changes

Any activity which creates steam adds to the moisture in your home. When possible, choose baked dishes instead of boiled ones, take shorter showers, run your washer and dryer less often, and make sure your lint trap and dryer hose are cleaned out frequently.

3. Fix Leaks

Air ConditioningAny constant water source in your home is going to mean more water in the air, including leaking pipes and faucets. Have a plumber visit to identify and repair your leaks, including minor slow drips.

4. Add Ventilation

When you do need to take a shower or boil water, make sure you have fans running to channel the steam outside. If you don’t have a range hood or bathroom ventilation for this purpose, get them installed.

5. Use Air Conditioning, Heating, & Dehumidifiers

Temperature-control and air-quality equipment help dry out the air whenever they’re running. Keep the air circulating through these systems whenever you can. If you’re noticing excessive moisture from your air conditioning unit which isn’t being drained correctly, schedule AC repairs as soon as possible to take care of the problem.
