Moving can present a hazard to your glassware, dishes, and other kitchen breakables, especially if they’re not properly packed. Everything from the type of box they’re stored in to the type of packing materials used can affect how safe your fragile dishes are in transit. Before you pack away your dishes and glassware and put them into temporary storage, consider these tips for keeping them safe.

How to Safely Pack Your Dishes for Storage

1. Use the Right Moving Supplies

You’ll need a sturdy box, packing paper, and strong tape to pack your fragile china and glassware. Layer the bottom of the sturdy box with a cushioning material, such as a folded towel or crumpled packing paper. Use the packing paper to wrap each of your breakables individually, and leave about six inches worth of padding on each side of your dishes.

2. Placement Is Key

storageLoad your plates and bowls on their side rather than laying them flat. Place the heaviest dishes on the bottom of the box, stacking the other, lighter dishes on top or beside them. Glasses should be loaded standing up.

3. Layer the Pieces Carefully

Place crumbled pieces of paper between each plate, bowl, or glass to keep them from bumping together during your move. Wrap the packing paper around all pieces, pushing the paper down into bowls and glasses.

4. Include Only Like Items in the Box With Them

Other breakables, including lamp bases and decorations, can be wrapped in the same fashion and placed into the same box with your dishes to maximize your space. Layer these, too, with padding. It’s important not to leave empty space in the box. Otherwise, your dishes will have a chance to move around in transit.

5. Label the Box “Fragile”

Even if you aren’t using professional movers to put your belongings into storage, you should note which boxes contain fragile materials. Boxes should be labeled “fragile” in multiple places, and it also helps to include a written inventory on the side of the box for organization’s sake.
