Installing a walk-in closet in your home is a simple way to keep clothing and accessories organized. When it comes to placing footwear in the storage area, there are common mistakes people make that end up causing unnecessary clutter. Below is a brief guide to what you should, and shouldn’t, do when organizing shoes in your closet.

Do:

Install adjustable shelving.

Cramming shoes in cramped cubbyholes is a surefire way to damage the footwear. To keep your investments intact, install storage shelves that are adjustable. This way, you can arrange the shelving to accommodate knee-high boots, heels, flats, and all other shoes of various shapes and sizes.

Categorize shoes for easy access.

If you have a lot of shoes, it could take a while to sort through the entire collection to find a specific pair. To make the search easier, display shoes in the walk-in closet by style, color, or occasion.

Configure footwear to save space.

Instead of placing each pair with heals touching, configure the shoes with one facing forward and its partner facing the back wall. Arranging each pair in this pattern will create more room on shelves.

Don’t:

Keep shoes in boxes.

Although you might be tempted to keep all the original shoe boxes, bulky packaging will take up extra space in closets. To keep the investments protected, you can wipe off shoes with a microfiber cloth to prevent dust from collecting.

Neglect to make space for shoe accessories.

If you have extra laces, removable insoles, dye, and other shoe care items, make sure to reserve a place in the walk-in closet to keep them. This way, you won’t have to search the house for the products when needed.

Toss shoes in storage baskets.

If you have bins and storage baskets in the walk-in closet, use them to hold items other than footwear. Shoes can easily get mixed together in containers, which could tact on time when looking for a specific pair.
