Event Information

Although it’s an essential step in any teeth cleaning routine, most Americans don't take the time to floss. In fact, only 16 % of adults report doing so every day. September is National Gum Care Month, making it the perfect time to remind you of the importance of flossing. Find out why it’s worth devoting a few minutes of your oral care routine to this step.

Why Gum Care Is So Important

Flossing removes bits of food and bacteria from between your teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. This prevents plaque buildup, combats cavities, and even fights bad breath.

By removing bacteria below the gum line and at the base of teeth, flossing also prevents periodontal disease. Characterized by swollen and bleeding gums, this ailment can lead to erosion of gum tissue and eventual tooth loss if not treated.

What’s more, studies have actually linked gum disease to an increased risk of heart disease. Bacteria can enter the bloodstream from your mouth and travel to the heart, causing inflammation of cardiovascular tissues.

How to Improve Your Teeth Cleaning Routine

teeth cleaningIf you don’t floss regularly yet, commit to the habit this September. For traditional flossing, start with about 18 inches of floss, winding most of it around each middle finger and leaving an inch to work with in the middle. Gently curve the floss around the base of each tooth in a C-shape and move it gently up and down, including beneath the gum line. Use a clean section for each tooth.

Individual, one-use flossing picks are also convenient ways to floss, and may be easier than working with a longer piece. Simply use the flossing end as you would a normal, longer piece, and utilize the pointy plastic end to remove any excess food from between tooth crevices.
