Above ground pools offer the perfect place to cool off and relax in your backyard. They can even increase property value as long as they’re well cared for. Below, you’ll find some tips for managing excellent water quality and keeping your pool clean to ensure it stays in top shape.

A Guide to Above Ground Pool Maintenance

Assessing Water Quality

above ground poolIt’s necessary to test pH and chlorine levels in the pool every day to ensure the chemicals are properly balanced. Test alkalinity on a weekly basis and look into calcium hardness and cyanuric acid once a month. These tests will show what chemicals you need to increase or decrease to keep the pool healthy.

Refreshing the Filter

Filters play a major role in ensuring your pool is ready to enjoy whenever you want to take a dip. It’s a good idea to run them for eight to 12 hours every day to prevent the water from turning green with algae growth. To keep the filter running properly, you need to use a timer to run the pump. Clean the baskets several times a week.

Backwash the water flow through the filter any time the pressure gauge reads eight to 10 pounds more than normal if you have a sand or DE pool filter. Cartridge versions require hose cleaning when the pressure rises five to 10 pounds or if you see that the flow of water isn’t moving as it should be.

Skimming and Vacuuming

Above ground pools require vacuuming to address algae and leaves that have sunk into the depths of the pool. Do this manually, or use an automatic pool vacuum. Skimming is also very important. This requires using a special tool to remove debris from the surface to prevent it from clogging the filters and pumps.

Using Cleaning Products

You can’t just dump any household cleaning product into the pool and assume that it will kill off algae and make the water swimmable again. Use pool-specific cleaning products to wash off the walls, liner, and equipment once a year to ensure it stays in top shape. Also, use a pool brush to remove buildup from the walls and liner and improve circulation.
