Humans lose a lot of heat through their heads, something the smokering, or nachaq, easily prevents. This traditional Eskimo accessory is a seamless, tubular wonder often worn around the head as a hood to keep you comfortable on frigid days and nights or around the neck as a stylish scarf. Oomingmak Musk Ox Producers Co-Operative in Anchorage, AK, is hosting a fantastic sale on Qiviut Nelson Island Smokerings until supplies last.

$15 Off Qivuit Nelson Island Pattern Smokerings!

qivuitThe 15th largest island in the United States, Nelson Island sits in the Bethel Census Area of southwestern Alaska. It features three villages on its Bering Sea coastline, and residents knitted the Nelson Island Diamond pattern seen on qivuit smokerings at Oomingmak Musk Ox Producers Co-Operative to provide customers with a beautiful and traditional way of keeping warm.

The diamonds embedded in the pattern were inspired by the diamond-shaped trim often found on islanders’ parkas. The patterns represent sea ice enclosing the island in the winter and breaking apart in stunning formations as the season morphs into spring. Many of the knitters participating in the co-op and cultural gift store are from the Nelson Island area.
