Potty training your toddler can be tricky — and this is especially true when they are in day care all day. Fortunately, with the right strategies and communication, you can make your potty training efforts successful at their day care center and home. Here are a few tips for getting it right.

Potty-Training Strategies for Kids in Day Care

1. Communicate With The Staff

Tell the day care staff about your specific potty training rules, whether your child will be wearing disposable training pants or underwear, and how often you are encouraging your child to go to the bathroom. The staff can then explain some strategies they may use with the kids in their programs.

2. Try the Big Toilet at Home

Small potties and seat inserts are tricky to clean, so they might not be an option. Practice using the real toilet at home, helping your child get used to the size and sounds of the fixture. If they can’t reach, place a stool in the bathroom.

3. Remember That Accidents Happen

Accidents will happen, so pack extra clothes, underwear, and training pants for your child when they go to their day care center.

4. Stick to Their Day Care Schedule

Your child’s day care center likely has a bathroom break schedule. For example, the staff may take groups of kids to the bathroom every hour. If this is the case, mimic this pattern at home. This will help your child transition smoothly between home and day care potty training.

While every child will have a different potty-training experience, there are certainly ways to make the process go smoother.
