Locals and visitors turn to Oak Grove Cemetery for memorial and reflection as well as education and insight. The cemetery offers a free, self-guided walking tour to provide guests with a peek into the past.

Beginnings

cemeteryThe story of the cemetery began in 1851 when a local church deacon purchased 15 acres for the city’s first formal public burial grounds. As the years passed and the property changed hands, it expanded, eventually totaling 47 acres by 1872 when it was purchased by a local non-profit. The non-profit group invested in the cemetery and made significant improvements which community members have expanded upon up to the present day. Visitors can see this in the park-like atmosphere of the grounds, which feature beautiful flower beds, walkways, and various monuments.
