Undergoing regular screenings is a critical component of breast cancer prevention. These screenings are comprised of imaging tests, and most women should start getting them annually once they turn 40. A mammogram is the gold standard to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages, other imaging tests, like breast ultrasounds, are also available at the Women’s Clinic of Lincoln. Here, the compassionate team at the Women’s Clinic of Lincoln, P.C. in Nebraska explains what you should know about these different screenings.

Mammograms

During a mammogram, the breast is compressed between two plates to spread the tissue and allow for more accurate images. It may sound painful, but for most, it is only mildly uncomfortable. A radiologist or a radiology technician, then takes images from two different angles to mammogram provide the most comprehensive results possible. Because this procedure captures a clear picture of the entire breast, it is ideal for screening purposes. Radiologists can usually tell if there are any abnormalities anywhere in the breast tissue by looking at mammogram images.

Ultrasounds

Unlike mammograms, ultrasounds cannot capture the entire breast in a single image. For this reason, they are not typically used for screening purposes; however, they can be helpful when diagnosing abnormalities revealed in a mammogram or found on a physical exam. Ultrasound images can typically distinguish between benign cysts that are filled with fluid and solid masses. Additionally, an ultrasound can capture masses that you can feel through the skin but don’t show up on mammogram results.
