Having a reliable brake system is one of the most important aspects of vehicle safety, as it allows you to stop quickly to prevent accidents on the road. Caliper pistons, pads, and other system components can wear down over time, which is why scheduling regular brake service is important. During inspections, mechanics can address minor issues before they lead to brake failure. If it’s been a while since you’ve had brake service, below are a few indicators it might be time for repairs.

3 Signs You Need Brake Repair

1. Car Pulls to the Side When Braking

brake-serviceIf the car veers to the left or right when you tap on the brakes, a stuck caliper could be to blame. The part creates friction by pressing brake pads against rotors to slow down the wheels. If one caliper is damaged, it could throw the braking system off-balance and lead to pulling.

2. Chemical Odor When Braking

If you notice a pungent odor in the car when you hit the brakes, the pads could be burned. This happens when brake fluid leaks between the pads, drum, or discs. Continuing to drive will cause the liquid to boil, which could lead to complete mechanical failure. A brake service specialist will check the hoses and additional components to pinpoint the source of the leak.

3. Brake Warning Light Is Illuminated

If the brake light comes on, there could be a problem with the hydraulic system. Often, the warning light illuminates when the brake system’s hydraulic pressure has been altered. If the light comes on intermittently, brake fluid levels might be low.
